Gold Wanted

A few days ago I drove by a shop with a sign reading "Gold Wanted". I got thinking: Is this not the desire of every human heart on planet Earth? And I'm not just talking here about physical gold. Each of us has something our heart prizes, values and longs for.

As I drove along, I started to consider what I would put in the place of the word "gold". Steady income wanted...A godly marriage partner wanted...Children wanted...Good health wanted. What would you put in the place of the word "gold"?

The things our hearts long for are not necessarily bad things, but how much we value them is highly relevant in our right-standing with God. God once showed me that I was praying more for a husband than I was praying about my relationship with God. What my heart was prizing in that moment was in competition with how I was prizing God. (And God is a jealous God; He will share me with no one!) So I had to repent and orientate my heart once again to God as my first love, as my 'gold'.

On the other hand, what we want is not always what is best for us. That is why we need to surrender our wants to God. When we leave our desires in His hands, He will with-hold from us what is not in His 'Best for my child' plans. But if what we desire is His best for us, He will bring it to pass in the perfect way at the perfect time. And that is such a reassuring truth.

If I consider Psalm 23, it speaks about God being our shepherd. And when we have made Him the shepherd of our hearts, then we will want for nothing. Our 'gold' will be in Him alone, our source of all good gifts will be found in Him.

Shepherd of this heart of mine: That I may know this truth, grab hold of it and live it out! Amen.
